HAVEit Final Event

At the HAVEit Final Event, 17 partners from the European automotive industry and scientific community demonstrated the highly automated future of driving. The EU funded project aimed at increasing driving safety and boosting the European automotive industry in the international market.

Frankfurt am Main / Borås (Sweden), 21 June 2011. An automated vehicle drives through a narrow construction site, and the driver does not steer, accelerate or brake one single time. Another car passes the vehicle in front of it, after the driver pushes the appropriate button. A truck recognizes a traffic jam and automatically slows down. All of these highly automated driving features have been developed through the collaboration of the European automotive industry and scientific community, with an eye toward making driving safer, more environmentally-friendly and more comfortable. The developments were presented at the Final Event of the EU funded research project HAVEit (“Highly automated vehicles for intelligent transport”) in Borås (Sweden) and at the nearby Hällered Volvo test track. Seven demonstration vehicles were on display.

“In view of increasing traffic density, the growing flood of information available to drivers and the rising average age of the population, highly automated vehicles will characterize the future of mobility. Automation will relieve drivers of some of the stress of driving as it guides them through traffic more efficiently, using more environmentally friendly technology”, said HAVEit project coordinator Dr. Reiner Hoeger.

The HAVEit Final Event featured besides the demonstrations, presentations regarding highly automated driving and the innovative work completed within the project, as well as an exhibition reach in posters, videos and simulations.

About HAVEit

HAVEit aims at the realization of the long-term vision of highly automated driving for intelligent transport. The project will develop, validate and demonstrate important intermediate steps towards highly automated driving.

HAVEit will significantly contribute to higher traffic safety and efficiency usage for passenger cars, busses and trucks, thereby strongly promoting safe and intelligent mobility of both people and goods. The significant HAVEit safety, efficiency and comfort impact will be generated by three measures:


Design of the task repartition between the driver and co-driving system (ADAS) in the joint system. It is of utmost importance to ensure that the driver is in the loop when required. It has to be ensured that he or she is able to react properly in a potentially critical situation. Within HAVEit a radically new approach will be developed: Instead of just switching off an ADAS system in case of an impending potentially critical situation, a progressive step-by-step-approach will be used to transfer the driving task back from the automated system to the driver. The interaction will initiate an early event chain, i.e. few seconds before a potentially critical situation occurs. It will bring the driver back into the loop before the critical situation and provide him or her with the optimum level of automation and assistance needed in critical situations. This novel approach for optimum task repartition between the driver and the co-driving system will take into account driver alertness and form the basis for all HAVEit applications.



Failure tolerant safe vehicle architecture including advanced redundancy management (from the SPARC predecessor project) will be further developed and implemented. The aim of the development is to match the needs and requirements of highly automated vehicle applications and to derive optimal system availability and reliability.



Development and validation of the next generation of ADAS directed towards higher level of automation as compared to the current state of the art. HAVEit integrates 6 cutting edge vehicle applications for both passenger cars and trucks aiming at improved safety and comfort as well as improved energy efficiency. HAVEit will thus contribute to reduced fuel consumption and reduced pollution to cope with the increasing road traffic problems. Most important feature for support in terms of mental overload is represented by the automated insertion into the traffic flow. Key features for driver support in terms of mental underload are automated queue assistance and temporary autopilot. Finally, the active green driving application on basis of the energy optimizing co-pilot will contribute to safe and ecological driving.


All cutting edge HAVEit functionalities will be validated and demonstrated in 6 validation vehicles.
